OH WHAT A TANGLED WEB WE WEAVE...

OH, WHAT A TANGLED WEB WE WEAVE                                    “Oh, what a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to deceive.”   This familiar statement is a line in the poem Marmion written by Sir Walter Scott in 1808.   On July 23, 2022 Commissioner Tommy Moore signed the form:   NOTICE OF DEADLINE TO FILE AN APPLICATION FOR PLACE ON THE BALLOT as prescribed the Texas Secretary of State.   The form set the ending date as August 26, 2022.   Tommy signed it as the Filing Officer and he is up for reelection.   Nothing on the surface would seem improper that is, except for one of the 3 people up for reelection signing the form setting the deadline.   The deadline date for a place on the ballot was actually August 22 nd according to the Secretary of State’s website.    The  August 26 th date is the last d...

Fulton Beach Shoreline restoration

The happenings at the Navigation District keep getting more interesting.   The middle of July, Navigation District Commissioner Micky Casterline reached out to me through a long-time mutual friend.   He wanted to talk.   The 3 of us met for lunch that Friday.   My wife’s Uncle by marriage and the Casterline family were involved in several seafood related businesses over the years and I came to know Bubba, Frank and Micky after moving to Rockport in 1996.   The Casterline family is a multi-generational name of well-known and respected business people in Aransas County.   If it swims in the bays around us, they have made a business out of it.   At that lunch, Micky told me about a meeting he had with one of the owners of Shoreline Protection Services (SPS), Inc. to see a demonstration of a new and innovative product that could take the place of common concrete bulkheads.   One intended location is on Fulton Beach Road located where Cherry...

Is the Navigation District missing money? How on earth would they know?

There have been some interesting happenings at the Navigation District that started last month.   Bear with me while I set up the story. On July 4 th , while we were spending time with our family in the hill country, my wife received a call on her cell phone from a woman looking for me.   I will not identify her because of the nature of the information she provided to me. I will call her Jane Doe for purposes of this post. I asked how she came to find me since the call came in on my wife’s phone. Google was her answer. Jane Doe asked me if I was going to be at the Navigation meeting the following morning, July 5 th . I was not as we were vacationing all week. I asked why. She said the District was planning to approve the annual Audit and she knew from past meetings that I had asked for some financial information through an Open Records Request and knew my way around financials. Jane asked me if I knew that Nelda, the District’s secretary had been fired.   I did...

Letter to Public Officials

At the June 2, 2022 forum, the Navigation District presented a dog and pony show on the health of Little Bay.   Attendees were encouraged to contact their elected officials on many levels and provided a contact list.   The following is a letter I sent on Monday June 6 th to everyone on the contact list they provided.   Some of the information is repetitive in posts already made.   _______________________________________________________________________________   If it has not already begun, your office is likely to start receiving phone calls and letters from Rockport residents who will be requesting, perhaps even demanding that you change the law affecting storm water drainage.   As written, smaller communities like Rockport are not required to implement BMP (Best Management Practices) in getting storm water off the public streets to its natural outfall.   In this case, the bays surrounding the Aransas County peninsula.   June ...
